Grand Prairie, TX (April 14, 2021) Captain John Irwin excels with a variety of different tackle and techniques, but catching quality fish on a fly is his favorite. Plano® gives him the EDGE™ he needs to keep all of his tackle organized and protected, including his prized possession- his flies.
“I keep all of my flies in EDGE boxes. I do a ton of inshore fly fishing, and I also do a lot of offshore fly fishing,” says Captain John Irwin. He specializes in putting anglers on inshore, nearshore and offshore giants in South Carolina’s Low Country. The salty pro looks to Plano to handle all of his tackle needs, fly or conventional. “I use a variety of EDGE boxes for a lot of things- tarpon baits, topwater baits, and all of my terminal tackle. But one of the best uses for these new EDGE boxes is storing flies.”
Captain John Irwin using the Plano EDGE system to keep his tackle protected and rust free!
“I’ve been drawn to the slim boxes for my flies. It keeps them pinned down a little bit better,” says Irwin. The 3700 Thin has the same footprint as the standard box but is half the height to add even more organization capabilities in a smaller space, making it the perfect choice for flies, lead heads, or terminal tackle. The DuraView™ crystal-clear polycarbonate lid lets the Captain find the right fly at a glance. Also, he can get to them quickly, thanks to the one-handed latch design.
“One thing I haven’t found in traditional fly boxes out there right now is rust prevention, as well as a really good seal,” says the seasoned fly guide, who relies on Plano’s Dri-Loc® O-ring seal to keep moisture out of his tackle. EDGE boxes are impervious to the saltwater’s harmful effects, with heavy duty construction and stainless steel pin hinges. “We’re out in the ocean. We’re always out in the elements. Things are always getting wet.”
“When natural material like feathers get soaked, it stays soaked. It’s like a sponge. You get a lot of water in there with not a lot of places for it to go.” Plano also helps the Captain deal with the water on his flies, with Water Wick™ reusable moisture-wicking packets that absorb any moisture inside the box. Rustrictor™ technology delivers 360 degrees of rust-prevention, adding another layer of protection for flies and other tackle.
“A ton of time goes into making these flies and they are expensive. We want them to last. Having a box that keeps them protected, keeps them sealed, and keeps them rust free is really important,” says Irwin. “That’s my EDGE. What’s yours?”
