Sporting Journal Radio Celebrates 500th Show

The Midwest’s radio home for the outdoors hits 500th show milestone
Sporting Journal Radio’s 500th episode was released on April 8th 2022. It features live guests at River Bend Resort on the Rainy River, discussing everything from how the show began and the early days to the current show and even current fishing conditions on the Rainy River and tips for fishing in snowy conditions. The 500th show was celebrated with a fishing tournament on the Rainy River and recorded in front of a live audience.
Sporting Journal Radio began in 2012 as a partner to the Minnesota Sporting Journal magazine. Hunting, fishing and outdoor recreation are covered in this one-hour show that airs weekly across Minnesota, North Dakota, Wisconsin, South Dakota and Iowa. Weekly guests include guides, experts, biologists, celebrities and more. Listeners can tune in on the 30-station network, on demand on the website or by subscribing to the podcast in various podcast apps. Sporting Journal Radio is part of the Mikaba Media family.
The show offers a unique way to reach diverse audiences. Sporting Journal Radio is broken down into separate hunting-only and fishing-only podcasts. All of the show’s angling content becomes the “Finding Fins Fishing Podcast” and the hunting content becomes the “Finding Fur and Feathers Hunting Podcast.” At times, the radio show content will feature edited-for-time interviews, while the podcast versions will have full-length unedited content. Bret Amundson, 2020 Upper Midwest Emmy Award-Winning host of Prairie Sportsman TV and is the host and founder of Sporting Journal Radio. He also guides waterfowl hunts with Mid Migration Outfitters. He previously was the publisher of Minnesota Sporting Journal Magazine and host of Northland Outdoors TV. He is a broadcast veteran who has worked at various radio stations in Fargo, ND, Minneapolis, MN and more.
“It’s a special feeling. I would like to say I never expected to get to 500, but in reality, I planned on doing this show the rest of my life,” host Bret Amundson said.
“We originally started the show to promote an outdoor magazine called Minnesota Sporting Journal,” Amundson said. The radio show continued to expand, and in 2020 he transformed the radio show into a podcast and eventually into an innovative video podcast that’s become a favorite of hunters and anglers in the Midwest.

In 2021, Amundson’s nephew, Dan Amundson, joined the Sporting Journal Radio team. He helps edit, organize and direct the recordings as Bret interviews the guest.
Sporting Journal Radio took home 11 awards at the 2021 Association of Great Lakes Outdoor Writers conference at Treetops Resort in Gaylord, Michigan. The awards included four first-place awards, five second-place awards, one third-place award and a Best-in-Show award.
