April 25, 2022 (Homestead, Fla.) – Earlier this month, Contender Boats’ factory team, Team C1, competed in the final leg of the Quest for the Crest series. Competing against more than forty teams in that final leg, the team of eight held on to claim the title and sport the series burgundy jacket, along with a hefty prize purse.
“I’ve been chasing this jacket since the inception of this series,” said Jon Cooper (AKA Froggy), C1 Mate and longtime sailfish competitor. “This title has eluded me for close to a decade and I’m still overwhelmed that it finally came to fruition.”
The Quest for the Crest series comprises three tournaments in south Florida, with stops in Palm Beach, Ft. Lauderdale and Miami. The final tournament took place over two days, and in the end, Team C1 claimed the coveted title. The team was sitting in fourth place after the first tournament. They secured a first-place win in the second tournament and were well positioned heading into that final leg.
The team competed in this series aboard a Contender 44ST that is specially rigged and built for kite fishing. Team C1 is composed of experts in every facet of the sport. Essentially, the boat has five experienced captains onboard. Not to be outshined by the astounding cumulative experience of the team, the boat is designed to make lightning-fast runs when needed while giving them the ability to maneuver stealthily and nimbly when moving on a fish.
“The team and boat performed like a fine-tuned machine,” added Cooper. “And while there is often a bit of luck involved when it comes to winning a series like this, having a phenomenal team and a high performance boat can’t be overstated.”
“We’re ecstatic that the team won this championship,” said Amanda Sabin, Director of Marketing for Contender Boats and Team C1 member. “Having them win this aboard a custom Contender sport fishing boat is a bonus.”
Team C1’s winning team is composed of Quinton Dieterle (Captain “Q”), Cap Hinkley, Jon Cooper (Froggy), Lucas Nido, Mike Lawson, Steve Cunningham, Kenny Pontaris and Ivan “I tighty here” Souto.
“This was a phenomenal showing for the Contender products overall,” added Sabin. “Still Right won the final tournament aboard their Contender Boat. Also, three other teams competing on Contender Boats placed in the top 10 for the series. Team C1 edged out Michael Jordan and his team aboard Catch 23 by a total of 8 points, the highest aggregate point total in the history of the series.”
