Far too common place, neither digital, nor paper maps show important information about public access easements that allow you to get to where you want to go without worrying about trespassing on private property or straying into a Marine Protected Area. If the challenge of poorly designated property lines on many maps weren’t bad enough, many states place the responsibility on the recreationist to know what kind of land is under their feet, or water under their boat.
The big picture:
The bipartisan Modernizing Access to our Public Lands (MAPLand) Act will enhance access to our nation’s vast outdoor recreational opportunities by digitizing and standardizing mapping information such as access points and permissible uses on public lands and waterways.
Go deeper:
The MAPLand Act protects the rights of private landowners, while providing outdoor enthusiasts the information needed to take full advantage and enjoy the best our vast public lands and waterways have to offer.
In between the lines:
In addition to improving the public’s ability to access public lands and waters, the bill would help public management agencies, in cooperation with private landowners prioritize projects to acquire new public lands or improve existing access.
