STOCKTON, Calif. (May 26, 2010) – The FLW Series will visit the California Delta in Stockton, Calif., June 9-12 for the third stop of the National Guard Western Division circuit. Hosted by the Stockton Sports Commission, the tournament will feature as many as 300 top bass anglers casting for top awards of up to $56,000 in the Pro Division and a Ranger 177TR with a 90 horsepower Evinrude or Yamaha outboard in the Co-angler Division.
“The fishing is going to be simple hard,” said National Guard pro Brent Ehrler of Redlands, Calif., who has three top-10 finishes in as many years at the Delta. “There is really no little trick or special bait that will win the tournament for you it’s a matter of keeping it simple and finding good pockets of fish which can be anywhere.
“The key is going to be reading the tide; typically you only have an hour or two window each day to find quality fish and it can be easy to overlook the good areas because they change every day. We have never been to the Delta in June so I am looking forward to going back this year, it should be a lot of fun.”
According to Calif. legend Mike Folkestad of Orange, Calif., the fish are going to be post spawn. The water is nice and warm which means a good top water bite.
“You can really catch fish anywhere on the Delta,” said Folkestad. “Clutch is going to be finding those areas where the fish are holding. A punch bite around hydrilla is going to be strong; buzzbaits and frogs should work well. I think it is going to take about 18-20 pounds per day to make it into the top-5.”
Anglers will take off from Morelli Park and Boat Launch located at 1025 West Weber Avenue in Stockton at 6:30 each morning. Weigh-ins will be at the Weber Point Event Center located at 221 North Center Street in Stockton. Wednesday, Thursday and Friday weigh-ins will begin at 2:30 p.m. with Saturday’s final weigh-in at 4 p.m.
Fans will be treated to a Family Fun Zone from noon to 4 p.m. at the Weber Point Event Center prior to Saturday’s final weigh-in. There will be drawings for rod and reel combos every 30 minutes during the event and a drawing for a $300 Cabela’s gift card at the conclusion of the weigh-in. Activities in the Family Fun Zone include a Ranger boat simulator and assorted fishing-themed games. All activities are free and open to the public.
In FLW Series competition, anglers are also vying for valuable points to qualify for the 2011 Forrest Wood Cup, the world championship of bass fishing.
Coverage of the California Delta tournament will be broadcast in high-definition (HD) on VERSUS. “FLW Outdoors,” will air October 17 from 12:30 to 1:30 ET. “FLW Outdoors,” hosted by Jason Harper, is broadcast to approximately 500 million households worldwide.
