Home-Lake Advantage May be Deciding Factor in FLW Tour’s Kentucky Lake Event

The May 14-17 Beaver Lake Tour stop in Rogers, Ark., saw record crowds of fishing fans in attendance over the course of the four-day Walmart Open. The popular stop provided a surprise ending when Arkansan Ray Scheide came away with the win and $200,000. With only two more qualifying events to go until the $2 million Forrest Wood Cup presented by BP and Castrol, which will be held July 30-Aug. 2 on the Three Rivers in Pittsburgh, Pa., the Land O’Lakes Angler of the Year points race is starting to take form and anglers are refining their strategies and focusing on the remaining stops at Kentucky/Barkley Lakes and Lake Champlain.
The Kentucky/Barkley Lakes event in Benton, Ky., may prove to play right into the hands of local Tour pros such as Team National Guard pro Ramie Colson Jr. of nearby Cadiz, Ky., Dan Morehead of Paducah, Ky., and Paducah-turned-Jonesboro, Ark., resident Terry Bolton. Bolton finished second the last time the FLW Tour stopped at Kentucky Lake -a 2006 event where a dead fish in the final day’s weigh-in cost him the victory. Kentucky Lake’s famed ledge fishing should be in full swing for the fifth Tour stop, and that usually means anglers need an intimate knowledge of the bottom contours. In short, experience and knowledge pays off. For example, Colson has racked up an incredible 21 top-10 FLW Outdoors finishes on Kentucky/Barkley Lakes.
Hooks:
Team Castrol pro David Dudley of Lynchburg, Va., has had a quiet year so far, with only one top-10 finish – a third-place effort at the Tour kickoff at Lake Guntersville in February. In 2008, Dudley won the fifth event of the Tour season and ended up winning the Land O’Lakes Angler of the Year Title. Dudley may be due for a win – and he finished sixth at the 2006 Kentucky Lake event. With a win, Dudley possibly could become the third all-time leading career money winner.
Rookie Jamie Feick of Blanchard, Okla., has yet to crack the top 100 in an FLW Tour event this season, but he’s fine with that. After an eight-year career in the NBA, Feick has set his sights on learning how to fish competitively. Read more about Feick at http://www.nwaonline.net/articles/2009/05/15/news/051609rzflwnba.txt.
Team Berkley rookie pro Stetson Blaylock of Benton, Ark., has slipped to second place in the 2009 Rookie of the Year race after a poor showing at Beaver Lake, where he expected a better finish than 140th. Blaylock won the previous event, the third FLW Tour event of the year at Lake Norman in Charlotte, N.C., to become the youngest to ever win a Tour-level event. Robbie Dodson of Harrison, Ark., holds the top spot in the Rookie of the Year race by 17 points.
Team National Guard pro Brent Ehrler of Redlands, Calif., continues a dominating season where his lowest finish of the year is a 15th-place showing at Lake Norman. Ehrler holds the Land O’Lakes Angler of the Year points race by 30 points over Clark Wendlandt of Leander, Texas, going into the final two regular-season events.
Don’t count Team Febreeze pro and 2008 Forrest Wood Cup winner Michael Bennett out yet. After a rocky start in the season opener at Lake Guntersville, Bennett has gotten back on track and is in form to defend his championship title in the 2009 Forrest Wood Cup.
Team Walmart pro George Cochran of Hot Springs, Ark., finished one ounce out of the top 10 at last month’s Beaver Lake Tour event. The veteran angler and 2005 Forrest Wood Cup winner won the 1996 Tour event on Kentucky Lake.
