Defending champion Brian Snowden and Edwin Evers were waiting for the weigh-in of the Tundra Ten at the Toyota Texas Bass Classic. Both knew they or the other six anglers didn’t have enough weight to catch Keith Combs’ or Mike Iaconelli’s second day totals.
That’s when Snowden wondered – “wouldn’t it be interesting if it was a tie – what happens then?”
“I don’t know,” Evers said.
“I’m sure it’s in the rules somewhere,” Snowden replied.
His clairvoyance was unknown to him, but not 30 minutes later was known to Combs, Iaconelli and the spectators.
Iaconelli, in second place after Day Two with 51 pounds, 12 ounces, had another great day, landing 25 pounds even.
Combs, the leader coming in with 55 pounds, 12 ounces, needed 21 pounds, 1 ounce to win. He caught 21 pounds even.
After the shock and puzzled looks came the announcement from emcee Dave Mercer.
“We’re going fishing again,” he told the crowd. “A sudden death fish-off. The one who catches the first legal fish (at least 14 inches) wins.”
The two fishermen are headed to the boat ramp. Stay tuned for the result.
