“It was one of those days you only dream about, just to have a day like that is just unbelievable,” said the 21-year old Wheeler.
Wheeler chose on Day One to target largemouth on a lake that is highly touted as one of if not the best Spotted Bass fisheries in the country. “I knew going into this tournament that it was going to be a tournament that Spots are going to be consistent but if you could step out on that first day and catch a big bag of Largemouth you could get a few pound lead and be consistent and just maybe bring it home,” said Wheeler.
Wheeler set the bar high on Day One, so high that his 5-06 lead over Scott Canterbury who sits in second place is so large that it’s the largest lead in the history of the FLW Cup following a Day One.
Canterbury sits in second place with 16-09. Dion Hibdon and Cody Meyer sit tied for third with 14-15 while Cody Bird sits in fifth with 14-11. Less than 2 1/2 pounds seperates sixth to 10th place.
