Heading into this morning, Gamma pro Skip Johnson was very confident. In fact, he let folks know that he was on the winning fish. This wasn’t just boastful dock talk, nope, Johnson put the smackdown on the FLW Tour Top 10 and the Kentucky Lake bass to bring home his first Tour win in and a fat check worth $100,000.
Johnson’s Championship Sunday limit weighed 24 pounds, bringing his four-day total to (88-10).
In second, just over a pound behind Johnson, was Mercury pro Jason Lambert with (87-8).
Rounding out the Top 5 are in third Snickers pro Jim Moynagh with (86-13). In fourth Ranger pro Randy Haynes who weighed (85-11). Fifth went to Mister Twister pro Clent Davis (84-3).
Johnson fished clean (on Sunday, anyway)
“I lost a lot of fish on the second and third days,” said Johnson. “Today I fished clean. I didn’t lose any fish today. It just seemed to come together for me. It’s been a fun day, a fun week. I knew I had this today. My last cast produced a 5-pounder. I hope that happens again one day, but I sure will take it today.”
Johnson stayed inside
“I found my spot on the Sunday morning of practice,” said Johnson. “It was a creek channel, inside of where a lot of guys were fishing. It’s by New Johnsonville, TN. I camped by it throughout practice and never saw anybody else fish it. It really produced the fish for me.
“Also, the local anglers were terrific. They were so cooperative. It was great.”
Johnson believes in himself
“After the terrible tournament I had at Pickwick, I was thinking about selling my boat,” said Johnson. “I had a super, super good week. I’m happy now for sure.
“It was a rough few days at the office with the heat, rain, torn up hands, but 500 fish later, it was worth it. I knew in my gut I should be here fishing the FLW Tour. I think I proved this week that I belong.
“I don’t know what to say, but wow.”
