If the primary goal of all Bassmaster Elite Series and Open competitors is to qualify for the Classic, then Jonathan VanDam has achieved that lofty goal during the 2012 regular season. He achieved this milestone by winning a series event. The win was his first Elite Series victory and in only his sophomore year. Most pros would be thrilled with results like these. VanDam wants better results.

“I can’t complain about my season,” said VanDam. “I would have liked to have done better, I had a few mistakes here and there that cost me, but overall I had a great year.

“I mean, it was only my second year, and I won an event against these guys. These are tough anglers to fish against. I am still learning and expect to do better next season.”

VanDam looks for 2013 to be an even more productive year.

“The way the 2013 Elite Series schedule looks, I feel very comfortable fishing those waters,” said VanDam. “Plus, I get to start the year fishing my first Bassmaster Classic. I am so excited and honored to fish it. Of course, I want to win it, but I really want to make sure I do well at my first one.

“From there I really want to work on becoming more consistent and become a player in the Angler of the Year race at the end of the season. I’m learning more than ever now; I can’t get worse! I have just learned so much over these first two seasons and am so grateful for what this year has brought me.”
