Ted Spencer of Sparta, Mo., won the grand prize in the BASS Anglers’ Legacy Sweepstakes, a contest that took minutes to enter and cost him nothing: He simply signed a pledge to introduce another person to the sport of fishing.
One of thousands who “took the pledge” during the sweepstakes, Spencer won a vacation at the Walt Disney World Resort near Orlando, Fla., and a fishing trip on the Disney waterways, guided by Bassmaster Magazine editor James Hall.
“It’s the first time I’ve ever won something,” said Spencer, whose prize included a two-night stay at Disney World. “I was planning on going to Disney World this year and now we will extend our stay to celebrate our 32nd wedding anniversary. My wife jumped up and down when she heard the news.”
Spencer said an online banner about the sweepstakes prompted him to go to http://www.takemefishing.org and become an Anglers’ Legacy Ambassador. In doing so, he became one of more than 85,000 people who since 2006 have pledged to “share the sport” with someone, according to the Recreational Boating and Fishing Foundation. The RBFF is the non-profit that initiated the Anglers’ Legacy program just more than two years ago.
“I knew I’d be taking kids fishing this year and that’s why I took the pledge,” said Spencer, whose father taught him how to fish when he was a kid. “We have great fishing lakes around here (Sparta, Mo.) that can get them hooked.
“I’ve always taken our two kids fishing, and our grandchild, who is on the way, will be an angler when he or she arrives.”
A longtime supporter of RBFF and its mission to increase angling participation, BASS has partnered with RBFF since 2007 to offer an Anglers’ Legacy sweepstakes package similar to the one Spencer won.
