Northern Open Day 2 Canceled due to High Winds

SANDUSKY, Ohio – BASS announced Friday the cancellation of Day 2’s competition at the Northern Open on Lake Erie. Unsafe weather conditions including high winds resulted in rough waters at first light – a northeast wind at 15 to 20 knots – prompting tournament officials to keep competitors from launching, in the best interest of all concerned.

Saturday’s forecast calls for southerly winds, which are not as troublesome for anglers on Erie, and tournament directors expect the tournament to resume. The full field of pro anglers and co-anglers will fish Saturday, which will be the final day of the competition.

The 104 pro anglers are competing for a top prize of $45,000, as well as potential berths in the 2010 Bassmaster Classic and the 2010 Bassmaster Elite Series season. The top two pros after this final Northern Open will be awarded berths in the Classic, set for Feb. 19-21 on Lay Lake out of Birmingham, Ala., while the top seven competitors will be invited to fish the Elite Series. Co-anglers are vying for a Triton/Mercury boat and motor package valued at $32,000.

Pete Gluszek of Mount Laurel, N.J., leads the pro angler division after hauling in 23 pounds, 13 ounces of Lake Erie smallmouth on Day 1. Garrett Green of Bracebridge, Ontario, Canada, trails Gluszek by barely more than 1 pound, with 22-12. Chris King of South Amherst, Ohio, is in third with 22-8.

Mike Staebler of Westerville, Ohio, leads the co-angler field with 20-8. Gary Crayton of Farmington, Pa., is in second with 19-1; Tom Alt of Columbia City, Ind., is in third with 18-4.

Saturday’s launch and weigh-in are at Shelby Street Boat Launch, 101 Shelby St. in Sandusky, Ohio. Takeoff is set for 7 a.m. ET. The weigh-in will be at 3:05 p.m.
