Bass fishing superstar KVD survives tiebreaker, will fish for title in WNY
Kevin VanDam, the all-time money leader in bass fishing history known more by his KVD nickname, advanced to the six-hour title round in dramatic fashion Thursday, edging Koby Kreiger via tiebreaker. Brett Hite had an easier time cruising into the final, dispatching Dean Rojas in what’s considered a blowout.
VanDam (Kalamazoo, Mich.) and Kreiger (Bokeelia, Fla.) both finished with five catches for a total weight of 11 pounds. However, VanDam advanced because his heaviest fish weighed more than Kreiger’s best catch.
Hite, who’s from Phoenix, Ariz., dispatched Rojas as his top five catches weighed 13.9 pounds while Rojas’ tallied 7.14.
The winner of Friday’s match not only earns $10,000 but also receives a berth in the 2017 Geico Bassmaster Classic. The competitors will fish from 8:30 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. with bassmasters.com broadcasting the match online.
VanDam has 22 first-place finishes on his resume while Hite has one.
