Following a strong cold front, predicted high winds, and dangerous boating conditions, all of which presented a challenge for the 43 teams that participated in the Crappie Masters sponsored by The Renewable Fuels Association “Ethanol Fueled With Pride”, American Ethanol, and Bass Pro Shops Carlyle Lake, Illinois 2019 Early Bird Kickoff National Qualifier held October 20, 2018 hosted by The City of Carlyle, and Clinton County Tourism.
It became apparent early in the weigh-in that 2018 weights would far eclipse those in 2017 at Carlyle Lake and no team displayed that more than the local team of Anthony Kannall and Mike Fields who literally shocked the crowd topping the scales with an eye popping 7 fish limit that weighed 11.27 pounds with a monster 2.85 kicker fish, the eventual Big Fish of the tournament, putting the rest of the field on notice that they were there to win. Kannall and Fields knew there were good fish in the area they chose to fish from productive pre-fishing. With years of experience on the lake, tournament day turned into a day they didn’t even expect, and it started early at 8:30 when Fields set the hook on the 2.85 pound crappie, which was followed up about 10 minutes later when Kannall hooked into a 2.30 of his own. The team stated they stuck to their game plan to fill out their limit and that once the wind got stronger their bite went away, but all they needed was secured in the livewell. The team went old school, corking with red and chartreuse Jigs in 7 to 10 feet of water over brush piles on the main lake. They also credited their Humminbird Electronics to keep on and finding the structure in the wind. Kannall and Fields took home $3,500.00 for the victory, $602.00 for Big Fish of the tournament, and an additional $250.00 for using E10 fuel in their boat compliments of The Missouri Corn Growers Association and American Ethanol.
