Rachel Krohn of Lake of the Woods Tourism with a sample of what anglers are experiencing this winter.
Crappies have been active fishing out of the NW Angle
HOT reports from all times of the day! Anglers reporting action spread out throughout the day. The best depths have been 23-26 or 28-32. Gold and pink have been the colors to use. Tip your jigging spoon with a minnow head and work the bottom, watching electronics for suspended fish. In the other dead stick hole, use a jig or plain hook under a bobber with a live minnow 4-6″ off the bottom. Up to 23 inches of ice is currently on the lake.
Resorts using the Rainy River reporting success! 20′ in the evenings the best as walleyes head up for the night bite. Use an active minnow on a pink, gold, or glow jig for the best results.
Up at the NW Angle, a good mix of fish are being caught along with limits of walleyes and saugers. Perch and pike mixed with walleyes in 22-25′ of water. Crappies active, but primarily on Canadian side. Use bright colors, pink, gold, and chartreuse. Ice still continues to build. Up to 20″ is a good amount for the roads heading from Young’s Bay to the island resorts.

With Great Bite
, Fish Frys in Full Gear
A tradition up at Lake of the Woods are the fish frys. Come up and experience world class fishing “just like the good old days” and celebrate after with a great meal of fresh walleyes and sauger.
Some groups use the fish cleaning houses at the resort they are staying at to clean their catch. Others let the guides do the cleaning.
As far as the fish fry, cook your own in your cabin or have a resort cook them for you. Many resorts will cook up your fresh catch with all the sides we have come to love with a fish fry. Click Here for info on Resorts at Lake of the Woods.
