Evenings Hold Best Bite…Ice

 is forming!

The ice is forming, and ice fishing typically begins around Dec. 6th, give or take.  Right now, there is still open water fishing to be had on the river and main lake, but the bays are getting iced in. Walleyes and sturgeon are biting from Rocky Pt. over to Long Point. Anchoring and jigging still the best method for walleye with a 3/4 oz jig tipped with shiner. Try Long Point and 4 Mile Bay in 18-22 feet during the day.

The Rainy River still hot with nice fish. Best results evenings anchored up and jigging with shiners in 15-22 feet of water. Try Vidas Landing, Baudette Bay, and in front of the Airport.  Nice smallmouth being caught near rocky/boulder areas.

Up at the NW Angle, walleyes are grouped up in neck down areas with current in 22 – 30′ and some rocky points adjacent bays.  Big crappies biting well in 25 – 28′ evenings.  Pike have feed bag on and are nailing the walleye jigs. Muskies are being trolled up in 12 – 20′.

Muskie Report:

Trolling Great Near Pockets!

Late Fall action has been hot.  The current report for muskies:  Anglers are having success trolling large crankbaits in 12 – 20 feet of water in neck down areas and off of rocky points.  Fish over 50 inches are being caught and released.

Anglers who prefer casting are reporting best results in current and neck down areas.  Some are jigging large rubber baits that emulate walleyes and sauger.
