Right now, professional fisherman Mark Martin along with Tim & Sarah Long owner’s of The Timbers Resort in Bergland, MI.  are busy preparing for first  ice on Lake Gogebic. That’s because on January 5th through 8th 2014 Mark Martin,  professional walleye fisherman, will team up again this year with Tim Long owner of The Timbers Resort located on the north end of Lake Gogebic, the largest lake in the U.P. and bring his world-class ice fishing vacation school to the area. Martin and his Pro Fishing Staff, the ice fishing students, media staff members, and several local fishing guides will take part in the school. Accommodations and meals will be provided by The Timbers Resort, The Lake Gogebic Motel, and Antonio’s Restaurant.  the attendees will be hosted by Tim and Sarah Long.

Last year’s ice-fishing school was a big hit with all who attended. So it was a natural fit for Martin to return to Lake Gogebic again in 2014. Martin and his pro staff members plan to arrive in Bergland a few days early. This gives the pro’s a chance to pre-fish some of the lake’s best and hottest fishing spots.

The ice fishing school events and daily schedules are as follows:

Sunday January 5, 2014. Registration and check-in at 12:00 Noon. A Fishing Seminar begins at 2:00 p.m. Seminar topics include equipment, outerwear clothing, and the best tackle choices and demonstrations of fishing techniques the students will need when out on the ice. At this time Martin will introduce his professional fishing staff, media personnel, and ice fishing school students. The Seminar concludes with Dinner and a question and answer period that lasts as long as necessary. The Seminar’s  will be held at the Intermediate School District (ISD) Building which is located behind Antonio’s Restaurant.

Fishing begins at daylight after a hot breakfast at Antonio’s Restaurant, and continues until dark, about 6:00 p.m. Box lunches will be provided to all participants.  Dinner and discussion of the day’s fishing begins at about 7:00 p.m. This runs until about 9:00 p.m. at the ISD Building.

Tuesday January 7th.  Same schedule as Monday.
Wednesday January 8th.  Fishing begins at daylight after a hot breakfast at Antonio’s Restaurant, and continues until Noon. A Hot lunch will be catered to the ISD Building staff and students  for the  Wrap up discussion and conclusion of the 2014 Lake Gogebic stop of the Mark Martin Ice Fishing Vacation School.  Fishermen can fish for the rest of the day if they choose to do so after the wrap up session. Students will need to make arrangements with Mark to let him know that they are going to do so.

Area sponsors for this event include several Lake Gogebic Area Chamber of Commerce members including The Timbers Resort, The Lake Gogebic Motel and Antonio’s Restaurant in Bergland. Corporate sponsors for the event include Clamoutdoor s/Ice Armor clothing, the TTI Blakemore Fishing Group, Plano Molding, Northland Fishing Tackle, Berkley ice rods and tip ups, Rapala and Marcum Electronics.

Last year’s school ushered in a genuine winter to greater Ontonagon & Gogebic County. During the event the winds howled across the lake from the north and west. As the ice thickened on the big lake, faces, hands, and feet tingled even when the fishermen were inside their shanties. In spite of the serious winter weather, the fishing was as good as it could be considering weather conditions.

This year’s event is in its final planning stages and there’s still plenty of time to sign up and be a part of this unbelievable opportunity to fish with the pros. If you want to learn some of the best ice-fishing tactics being used today that will deliver solid fishing action, don’t hesitate for another minute.
