Bluegills: little fish, big fun
It’s just that the little fish don’t get the publicity that bigger, more glamorous species receive.
Unlike trout, there is no Bluegills Unlimited.
And unlike bass, there’s no Bass Anglers Sportsman Society with its televised tournaments and celebrity anglers.
Fishermen don’t charter boats to go after bluegill as they do for big river catfish, and seldom hire a guide to steer them to bluegill hotspots as they do for crappie.
Fishermen don’t book trips to remote wilderness areas in pursuit of bluegill, or spend a fortune on fancy tackle and gear.
However, if you visit virtually any body of water in the summertime – lake, stream or farm pond – chances are you’ll see someone fishing for bluegill.
The reason why is simple: bluegill are abundant and easy to catch. That makes them a perfect “starter” fish for youngsters.
