MAYFIELD — Area residents and visitors from across the region are set to descend upon the Great Sacandaga Lake and surrounding communities for the annual Walleye Challenge ice fishing derby.
Two ice fishing contests are set to be held in conjunction on Saturday, Feb. 16, including the Fulton County Tourism Department and Fuel-N-Food’s 11th annual Walleye Challenge and the Great Sacandaga Lake Fisheries Federation annual ice fishing contest.
The event’s co-coordinator is Lou Stutzke, owner of Fuel-N-Food, 3006 Route 30 in Mayfield. Stutzke said the event is an opportunity to “show off” what Fulton County has to offer.
“I’m excited to showcase our area — I love Fulton County,” Stutzke said. “We have the best of everything: Mountains, lakes, and all four seasons. I love to show the area to everybody and hope that they come back in the summer.”
The Walleye Challenge, held from 7 a.m. to 3 p.m., registers 1,750 fishing enthusiasts who compete for prizes. It is an $87,500 contest consisting of $2,149 per hour in payouts and over $17,000 in miscellaneous prizes. There also will be drawings for a side by side, a 4-wheeler, and a snowmobile. If a yellow tagged Walleye is caught during the 8-hour contest, an additional $300 will be paid.
