lambeau: MuskieFirst welcomes CHAD CAIN to the chat room tonight for a discussion about all things muskie! Chad is a guide is S.Illinois and N.MN and partner in Musky Armor. Welcome Chad! VMS: Thanks for coming Chad!! Chad_Cain: Glad to be here lambeau: tell us about your year on the water this year, Chad… Schuler: Chad, can you give me some tips on catching prespawn fish in shad based lakes? muskyboy: Hey Chad Chad_Cain: In 2006? VMS: 2006 chad… Chad_Cain: Schuler, find the warmest shallow bays early, and make sure there is shad around Schuler: what kind of lures do best? and do you decided depth based on where the shad are? Chad_Cain: 2006 was a great year again. quite a few big girls . muskyboy: biggest??? lambeau: what were your highlights? tuffy: same 55′ from last year Chad_Cain: muskies will be shallow early, so I just concentrate there. Only cold fronts push the shad back out usually Schuler: Thanks Chad_Cain: 55″ was the biggest again, and it was the same fish in fact Netman: What lakes do you guide? muskyboy: same fish, too cool Chad_Cain: Kinkaid and Vermilion for now Hunter4: 55 sweet lambeau: was she caught on the same (or close) location? what about presentation? sorenson: do you find color or speed more important to consider when fishing shad forage-based lakes? lambeau: it’s a testimony to your good release skills and caring for the fish. Chad_Cain: about 400 yards away. On a rock point in 2005, then in a weedy bay in 2006. Both bucktails Hunter4: Chad do you catch on the same spots on the same times during the day? C_Davis: What time of the year do you guide on Vermillion? ghoti: Trained fish//1 Chad_Cain: both are important. Experiment with both until you find the pattern Netman: What type of lures do you find work the best for you? Chad_Cain: I guide on Vermilion from June through the end of September Netman: Or what are you confident with DAHLTAILS: when the shad move deeper during a cold front witch method do you use? trolling or casting? tuffy: do you troll much chad? Chad_Cain: I truly love to fish bucktails and topwater. Cover lots of water, and they still catch a ton of fish. Netman: Thanks Chad_Cain: I troll only when the conditions call for it. I prefer to cast lambeau: any general seasonal patterns you see through the summer on V? Chad_Cain: Fish shallow VMS: I have never been to Kinkaid, but would like to for a spring trip…when does the action generally pick up in spring? Chad_Cain: Usually by mid February until the end of March is our pre-spawn bite down here lambeau: about how far is Kinkaid from the Chicago? Chad_Cain: close to six hours tuffy: 330 miles lambeau: if someone were heading there for a first time early spring trip, what 3 lures would you recommend? MuskieMike: What baits do you prefer shallow pre spawn? tuffy: how fast do you troll chad? Chad_Cain: You wouldn’t know that Kinkaid is in Illinois when scenic it is! 92 miles of mostly undeveloped shoreline Chad_Cain: Shallow Invader, Rattlin Shad, Jointed Believer VMS: on Badfish #1, you used believers for fishing…what setting do you use on these baits and do you try to make contact with structure at all? tuffy: true that, true that C_Davis: I am thinking about a trip to V this summer I hear the fishing pressure is pretty intense is it bad during the week also? Chad_Cain: 4 mph in cold water, up to six or seven in warmer water Chad_Cain: deep setting on the jointed believers. Bottom contact is good, and they are great at not getting snagged!!!!!! Chad_Cain: the pressure is getting pretty insane up there, even during the week tuffy: ever fish with colby? Chad_Cain: I will be at the Bears game this weekend, it got cold anyway down here. lambeau: what has helped your continued success in spite of the pressure? are you doing anything differently? Chad_Cain: fishing my butt off, and nine years of experience on the lake helps a TON Chad_Cain: I have not fished with Colby. Super nice guy though VMS: Have you found different patterns during the spring other than the shallow shad? ghoti: Have you noticed a change in fish locations, with the increased pressure on V.? tuffy: beckman or frabil? DAHLTAILS: How is the muskie action in mid Dec. on Kinkaid Chad_Cain: in the spring, all females will be going shallow no matter what. They have to spawn. Most of it is in shallow water Wake_Um_Up: % of time fishing V’s East vs. West end? Netman: I fish Pewaukee the most pressured lake is SE Wisc. Extreme one has had great sucess in trolling, how would you cast this lake? Chad_Cain: frabill . Chad_Cain: Mostly east and center, but west can kick butt at times too Chad_Cain: I don’t remember much about Pewaukee VMS: When you pick a shallow spot on kinkaid, how much does that area need to relate to the main channel? Chad_Cain: Decemver on Kinkaid can be hit or miss depending on weather kreegz: Chad, just wondering what conditions you wait for, for the trolling bite on Kinkaid, and at what time do you stop trolling and start casting again? Chad_Cain: The main channel is super important, but the feeder creek channels in most coves are!! muskie_man: thinkin bout a trip to kinkaid sometime, does the lake fish similiar to cave run in the spring? Chad_Cain: I just wait until the thermocline starts on Kinkaid to start trolling Chad_Cain: very similar to Cave lambeau: what signs (temp, weather, etc.) should a person look for as a “trigger” that it’s time to head south for the pre-spawn bite? muskyboy: what water temps do you start to troll really fast? Chad_Cain: stable weather down here in February. watch my message board on my website too in order to see what the guide team is up to VMS: does water clarity play any role in that choice as well? lambeau: www.chadcain.com Chad_Cain: start going fast once the water is around 70, atleast for me that works tuffy: does andy still guide for you? Chad_Cain: Water clarity doesn’t make too much difference for me. It seems like I can still go pretty fast lambeau: ok…how about some questions focusing on L.Vermilion for awhile? VMS: What is your favorite structure on Vermillion? musky23: How important do you feel speed is as a trigger on Vermillion? DAHLTAILS: Does wind play a big factor on Virmilion? muskyboy: Big V, what is prime time generally? Jason_Boersma: Welcome back, Do you night fish on V? If so, which hours do you prefer and what presentations do you like? DAHLTAILS: Do you get a better grip w/ the Musky Armor gloves compared to the lindy gloves lambeau: (let’s come back to Musky Armor in a few minutes…L.Vermilion for now…) Chad_Cain: I just like how thin the Musky Armor gloves are, you keep your feel in them Paul_H_: how were # on big v this year compared to past years Chad_Cain: my boat numbers were down a little but that is just because I had to share the lake with about a thousand more people last summer Wake_Um_Up: Your Top 3 lure combinations for the V during it’s “peak”……Top 3 color choices…… kreegz: how much for the musky armor gloves? ghoti: Earlier you mentioned the increased pressure. Has this changed the way you fish it? lambeau: what are your suggestions for dealing with the pressure that people encounter, especially on the east end of the lake? Paul_H_: Did this affect location of fish on structure Chad_Cain: I will most likely leave the lake after this summer. Starting to take the fun out of it to be honest!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!1 bluegill entered the room. VMS: What has been your most productive structure type on Vermillion and how does it compare to what others are doing out there? Chad_Cain: I like Red, Black/Red, and Purple/Blue. My favortie three muskyboy: I heard that Chad, many other lakes in MN including the one you left for V Wake_Um_Up: Thanks Chad_Cain: I like rocks myself, but I have really had to adapt and learn to love weed fishing Jason_Boersma: Do you night fish on V? If so which hours do you prefer and what presentations do you like? Chad_Cain: I like to fish at night when it is dark, without much moonlight DAHLTAILS: Have you ever fished the cisco spawn on Virmilion? Chad_Cain: not yet, but I will someday. VMS: So…if you decide to leave Vermillion, any idea where you might go? lambeau: do you have any navigation suggestions for Vermilion? preferred GPS chip, etc? Chad_Cain: Not sure yet where I will go Chad_Cain: I heard that Navionics now has a one foot map of Vermilion. I haven’t seen it yet, but I will check it out for sure VMS: Do you usually get around the whole lake or do you concentrate on one main basin? Chad_Cain: With the increase in pressure, it has forced me to fish all of the lake. When it takes a long time to find a open spot, that tends to force you to fish elsewhere lambeau: let’s spend a bit of time talking about Musky Armor…what products are in the ’07 lineup? DAHLTAILS: Can you get replacement skirts for Lungen tails? Chad_Cain: The main product is the glove. We are selling some other apparel such at long sleeve t-shirts, lots of different hats, Ocean Wave glasses for $115 lambeau: describe the glove for us… VMS: Are the gloves hook-proof for the most part or do you still run risk of getting nabbed by a barb? Chad_Cain: I always hated using the plumber gloves or other leather gloves because all of the gloves available were to bulky to fit in the tiny slot between the gills and the gill plate Netman: how much are the gloves again? Chad_Cain: the gloves completely protect you from the gill rakers, not teeth or hooks. They sell for $15 for a pair Schuler: Chad, are the musky armor shoes still being made? lambeau: where are the gloves available? Netman: thanks Chad_Cain: no more shoes, the gloves are at SMokey’s, Rollies, Thornes, and on our website, muskyarmor.com Paul_H_: is the rod and reel choice any different for the big blades? Chad_Cain: I really like the Daiwa Luna 300. Best reel I have ever used so far. No sponsor either muskie_man: hows does the big blades like dc10s work with the maina reels that i know you sometimes use? muskyboy: yeap best reel for everything including big stuff Chad_Cain: They work ok, but they wear you out a little more. Paul_H_: do you use a power handle with them Paul_H_: the lunas Chad_Cain: I think they come with a huge handle already that kicks butt VMS: are you tending to longer rods, and what do you feel are the advantages or disadvantages of them? Netman: What’s your set-up? Netman: What do you feel comfortable with ghoti: Have you followed the trend of bigger lures or have you stayed with more conventional sizes? Chad_Cain: Long rods = Better, wider figure 8’s, and since I bucktail fish a ton, I catch a lot of fish on the figure 8. I like atleast 8 foot rods esoxdonovan: How do you feel about being on TV all over the country fishing with Jim for Musky Hunter TV Netman: You guys rock Chad_Cain: I had a blast filiming with Saric. Wait till you see our episode in March, the last fish we catch is awesome!! ESOX_Maniac: Chad- What’s the single thing that you feel most muskie fisherman could do to improve their percentages? Chad_Cain: Sharp hooks, and learn to fish smarter not harder. Fish the feeding windows, and follow moon rise/set religously!! lambeau: we’ve got about 10 more minutes… sworrall: How would someone hire you on either body of water? lambeau: www.chadcain.com Pointerpride102: how much of your fisheries education do apply to your fishing? Chad_Cain I apply my fisheries education on the water every day, understanding the predator/prey relationship helps me locate the apex predators.sworrall: Chad, thanks for a great hour! sworrall: How can one reach you to book a day on the water, sir?Chad_Cain: 618 549-3074 or 618 534-1477 or [email protected] for booking information.
