HERBIE: IF I ONLY HAD ONE TO PICK TAKING EVERYTHING IN ESPECIALLY CONSISTANCY REGARDLESS OF WEATHER I’D HAVE TO SAY AUG I GUESS BUT IT’S WHEN THEY ARE BITING

the man: How do you set your drag Herbie? So many guys lock them down but I don’t like doing that.

HERBIE: THEY WON’T DO YOU ANY GOOD TILL YOU’RE HERE, I’LL TAKE CARE OF YOU WHEN YOU GET HERE, IF YOU WANT TO SLEEP WITH A MAP UNDER YOUR PILLOW SEND ME ONE AND I’LL DO SOME CHICKEN SCRATCH’N

WI Skis: How was the season last year up at the lodge?

HERBIE: I DON’T BELIEVE IN IT EITHER,TO MANY FISH LOST AT BOATSIDE AND NOT EVERYONE IS GOOD AT THUMBING,IF YOU GOT SHARP HOOKS AND SUPERLINES IT REALLY DOESN’T TAKE MUCH MORE FISH LOST OVER SETTING

WvRiverMusky: sounds good, just making sure im on top of my game… trip of a lifetime for me. been wanting it for 20 years. cant wait.

HERBIE: LAST YEAR 55″ BUT WE HAD A TON OF 50-53 AND WHAT COULD HAVE BEENS

LarryJones: Mostly Dawging?

HERBIE: I WOULD SAY THE SEASON WAS A GOOD ONE OVERALL,WE GET OUR SHARE YEAR IN AND YEAR OUT,BIT I’M GETTING SICK OF WARM MID SEPTS

I’mFirst: dbl 10’s with a smoke blade, org/blk, and walleye dawgs,e all know they work, what was the hot bait last fall?

Medford Fisher: Mr. Herbeck, I’ve been going to LOTW (Nestor Falls) for the past 5 years with my brother and dad as our annual trip…What would be the biggest reason (if any) to come to Eagle instead of LOTW???

HERBIE: PROBABLY CISCO POUNDER BUT RAIDERS,GRAMAS,MAGS ALL GET THIER SHARE TOO.

I’mFirst: the dude abides ………….

WvRiverMusky: fish much shoreline in august or is it open water reefs? not sure what to expect.

HERBIE: WHILE EAGLE IS BIG IT IS A PUDDLE CAMPARED TO LOWDS,EASIER TO MAKE BASIN CHANGES,AND I’D HAVE TO SAY A MUCH BETTER SHOT AT A TRUE 45# FISH

Murph: Are the big fish in the gin water or the stained

dzgolf2: Is there a large difference in the numbers or size of fish caught between Pounders and MagDawgs? Not of fan of throwing Pounders if I don’t have to..

ksauers: reefs and island shores get a guide for sure

william bennett: herbie, have you had a chance to try the new double dogs and what did you do on them and what do you think about them?

HERBIE: AUG IS COMBO WEEDS AND REEFS VARIES ACCORDING TO WEATHER,WIND,AND CONDITION OF THE WEEDS,THOUGH DEEPER REEFS ARE THE SLEEPER MOST DON;’T HAVE CONFIDENCE IN IN CANADA AND WHERE I FIND MYSELF RETREATING TO MORE AND MORE CUASE I GIVE EVERYTHING ELSE UP TO EVERYONE

Murph: we need a pounder caddy, he can heave the pounder and then hand you the rod, I’ll hire

HERBIE: NOT FOR ME CAUSE I DON’T THROW POUNDERS MUCH!!!

HERBIE: YA SPENCER DROPPED SOME OFF FOR ME LAST FALL AS PROTOS AND THEY ARE GREAT OVER SHALLOWER SRTUCTURE (S) SIMILAR TO SHALLOW DAWGS WITH IN MY OPINION MUCH BETTER ACTION

nick: what is your take on the “krusher” by llugen, any luck on lures on this type? trolling in 20+?

HERBIE: HOPEFULLY BUSY ALL THE TIME! HAVE BEEN ANYWAY BUT SLOWEST TIMES ARE MAY

LarryJones: Monster Tubes work there

HERBIE: USE THE KRAVE ALOT AND LOVE IT,ACTION IS A CROSS BETWEEN RAIDERS AND GRAMAS AND IT THROWS INTO THE WIND LIKE A DREAM

thedude: How are the ice conditions on the bigger lakes? Were headed to Ear Falls in two weeks.

william bennett: what major changes have you done to AML lately

HERBIE: TUBES WORK AT LEAST EVERY TIME PETE HAS BEEN HERE HE CATCHES FISH ON EM,I GOT A 53 OFF THE DOCK TESTING ONE AND A HANDFULL OF OTHERS,NEED TO THROW THEM MORE

HERBIE: ICE IS GOOD,DEEP AND NOW A CRUST ON TOP

HERBIE: WELL LETS SEE 3 NEW CABINS IN THE LAST 5 YRS, ANEW DOCKSIDE MARINA FACILITY ID BEING BUILT AS WE SPEAK,NEW 50HP MERCS FOR NEXT SEASON,2 NEW GUIDE BOATS AND THE USUAL UPGRADING EVERY SPRING

doonan: how come u stick your son guiding Gillespie when he is up there? Camera Shy? 🙂

WvRiverMusky: im worried about the trolling motor on our rental boat. what are you running on the upgraded rental, (last all day covering water)

HERBIE: I HAVE HAD 3-7 FISH DAYS WITH 1-3 50’S WITHIN SITE,DID A SHOW WITH JIMMY A YEAR AGO BURNED 4 GALS OF GAS 53 WAS BIGGEST SO YOU CAN TRAVEL AS FAR AS YOU WANT AND EXPLORE AND SOMETIME CERTAIN BASINS ARE HOT AND YOU SHOULD BUT THERE’S ALOT FROM 500YDS OUT TO 1`0 MILES

WI Skis: What kinda electronics do you have on your rental boats?

Slamr:can you tell us about your set up for double 10s? rod/reel, bait, etc?

HERBIE: I LOVE THE WEST NOT MUCH PRESSURE CAUSE EVERYONE THINGS THE SAME AS YOUR QUESTION , GIVE ME ALOT OF WIND ON A SUNNY DAY AND I’M THERE,YA DARK DAYS AND PMS ARE GOOD BUT…….

WvRiverMusky: have any site fishing oppurtunites for musky, and if so whats best time.

HERBIE: LOWRANCE BUT NOTHING FANCY

HERBIE: SITE FISHING IS BEST UNDER REAL LATE ICE OUTS AND COLDER MAYS

Farmer Rick: I have heard the maps for eagle are not very good. Many unmarked reefs and hazards. what is the best map that you have found?

HERBIE: WHATEVER THE FISH HAVE BEEN TELLING ME THEY WANT BUT STARTERS ARE A CRANK PROBABLY PERCH TILL WATER CLEARS THEN CISCO OR SUCKER,GRAMA,DAWG AND SOMEONE MIXES UP A HEAVY BLADED 10

WvRiverMusky: whats the watertemp usually in May and august?

HERBIE: REVO WINCH FOR 10’S OR THE REG REVO WITH 1/2 SPOOL

HERBIE: WE GOT IT MARKED REAL GOOD BY US ANYWAY,BEST IS HOTSPOTS THANK GOD NO BETTER ONES

muskydr: Story time Herbie, you fish a historic lake what is the coolest thing that has happened as you were out on the water?

WvRiverMusky: i would also like to catch some lake trout just to say ive done it, take very long to get on them?

Farmer Rick: I can see your point about not having good maps. just nice to have the hazards marked for navigation…

doubleD: How much for guide at AML per day?

HERBIE: IT ALL DEPENDS ON THE POSITION RELATIVE TO THE 8 OR OVAL IF IT GOING AWAY OUT OF TURN YA DOWN AND INTO THE FISH IF IT’S COMING AT YOU YOU NEED TO PULL THE FISH AFTER THE SET TILL IT WANTS TO HEAD DOWN OR OUT

Farmer Rick: I hate it when the fish crap on my pants too always carry a spare so I dont have to smell digested fish the rest of the day too JK

HERBIE: I’M TALKING ABOUT ME CRAPPING MY OWN PANTS ,TILL ONE GETS BOATED IT’S JUST A FISH STORY BUT I HAVE HAD LEGIT 50# FISH IN MY ARMS AND I’VE ENCOUNTERED SEVERAL MUCH BIGGER

HERBIE: PROBABLY NOT REALIZING JUST HOW IMPORTANT BOATSIDE MANUEVERS REALLY ARE AND GETTING IT RIGHT,AND NOT JUST WAITING TO SEE A FISH BEFORE STARTING

WI Skis: Are there a lot of figure 8 fish caught up on Eagle?

HERBIE: OPENER THRU MID SEPT BUT TO BE HONEST IT’S BEEN 2 YRS SINCE I SEEN A SUPER HOT CONSISTANT TOPWATER BITE CARRY THROUGH MOST OF THE SEASON SO IT HAS TENDED TO BE REALLY WEATHER RELATED AND WHAT THE FISH ARE TELLING YOU

HERBIE: FIGURE 8 FISH ON EAGLE? NA-A-A-A!

wetdog: Herbie,how much burning of 10’s do you do in a season and how productive has it been for you?

I’mFirst: Steve you have perfected live bait fishing on Eagle, what’s your secret?

HERBIE: THE SMART ONES, REALLY IT CAN NEVER HURT YOU YOU’RE GETTING INTO THE BOAT WITH SOMEONE WHO HAS BEEN ON THEM EVERYDAY SINCE OPENER AND YOU JUST ROLLED IN? DEPENDS ON WHAT YOU WANT TO ,LEARN AND HOW QUCKLY,IF YOU DON’T WE STILL GIVE YOU MORE SPOTS AND PATTERNS THAN YOU CAN GET TO IN A WEEK.

HERBIE: WHEN I BURN I GENERALLY PREFER 8’S IF YOU’RE IN THE BOAT WITH ME YOU’D BE BURNING THE 10’S! AND AGAIN IT’S WHEN THE FISH TELL YOU IT’S WHAT THEY WANT GENERALLY AND VERY GENERALLY TYPICALLY DURING VERY ACTIVE PHASES AND WARMER WATER

Slamr: i know its a fishing site and all, but can you tell us a little about the whitetail hunting?

muskydr: Steve, Twin Valley or Eagle?

LarryJones: Yea I want to know if I can Hunt & Fish in October

I’mFirst: I saw them duck hunting, then muskie fishing when I was there I think

WvRiverMusky: how much for fishing license for 2 weeks

I’mFirst: and the duck was tasty!

HERBIE: SECRET? PROBABALY 25+ YEARS OF DOING IT NO WAY IS THERE ANY ONE SECRET TO IT

HERBIE: CERTAINLY CAN DUCKS/GEESE/GROUSE ARE OPEN MUZZELOADER AND BOW OPEN BUT YOU NEED TO DO ONE OR THE OTHER A DAY NOT TRY AND SPLIT DAYS IT REALLY ISN’T PRODUCTIVE MOST OF THE TIME

HERBIE: GENERALLY BLACK AND CHANGE BLADE COLORS ACCORDINGLY
