Walleye activity increasing as longer days, more oxygen and April spawn approaches.
March is definitely trophy pike time on Lake of the Woods. Resorts can assist.
Walleye season open until April 14. Pike open all year. Permanent fish houses out through March 31. Fishing still consistent in multiple locations this week. Fishing good in the mud 26-28 or 30-32 feet of water, showing lots of eater walleyes and saugers. Jigging with frozen shiner head and dead stick with live minnow best. Electronics helpful. Use bright colors, plain hooks, or buck shots. Up north by Knight and Bridges Islands, reefs still producing in 29-31 feet. Glitter gold, gold/pink, or pink/white the hot colors. Lots of big saugers in the mix with jumbo perch. With a timid bite, anglers are finding their own techniques to get the bite. Active pike in shallows 8-12 feet using tip-ups set 1/2 the depth.
On the Rainy River and Four Mile Bay, walleye are officially in pre-spawn mode. Spring regs apply. Morning and evening runs the best near the mouth of the river, the airport, or East by Clementson Bay. Find deep pockets and jig near adjacent rivers.
Up at the NW Angle, limits filled quickly with numbers of eater walleyes and saugers. 24-28′ best depth using gold, pink, chartreuse, or orange. Pike and perch active in adjacent spots. Good crappie bite in Ontario waters.
Did you know Lake of the Woods is home to some of the largest jumbo perch in the Midwest. It’s a fact. These monsters fight like walleyes and in some cases, are as big. Come up and take a shot at a perch of a lifetime!

“Tales from the Rails” Coming
to the Baudette Depot
The Depot Preservation Alliance invites the public to the opening of a new exhibit at the Baudette Depot on Saturday, April 5, 2014. The exhibit is titled: “Tales from the Rails.” The day will open with a ribbon cutting at 11:00 a.m. and close at 4:00 p.m.
The exhibit features a mockup section of a 1940 passenger rail car, complete with two restored 1940s rail car passenger seats, and includes a special “window view” mural by mural artist Scott Murphy. Visitors will be able to enter into the exhibit, browse a number of rail travel booklets, read “first-person” tales of rail travel, and “experience” what rail travel might have been like in the 1940s. Allen Noska and Carnita Tuomela dba Venture Exhibits of Duluth, MN, are the exhibit consultants and creators. At 1:00 p.m., “Ditch Creek,” a teenage bluegrass band with members from Birchdale and Duluth will entertain with guitar, mandolin, fiddle, resonator guitar and vocals. Railroad songs are on the play-list.
The exhibit is made possible, in part, by a grant provided by the Region 2 Arts Council and the Minnesota Historical Society through funding from the MN State Legislature as approved by a vote of the people of Minnesota, November, 2008 (Legacy grants).
Walleye Season on The
Walleye Capital
Open till April 14th!
Some of the best action of the ice season happens in March. In the lower part of MN, the fishing season for walleyes and pike ends the end of February. On Lake of the Woods, however, the season remains open until April 14th. Great news and an extended season.
Resorts are allowed to keep their fish houses out through March 31st. With over 30″ of ice and a good snow pack, chances are that we will be ice fishing to the very end.
Take advantage of fish “putting on the feed bag” and getting ready for the spawn.
MN is now the 5th state in the U.S. offering EDL/EID, which are accepted forms of identification and proof of residency.
As of February 3, 2014, the State of Minnesota offers Enhanced Driver’s License (EDL) and Enhanced Identification Cards (EID). They are dual-purpose card(s) designed for the user’s convenience. In addition to serving as a typical driver’s license, the card allows a Minnesota resident to re-enter the U.S. at its land or seaports when returning from Canada, Mexico, Bermuda or the Caribbean. An EDL is also available to a driver who qualifies for a commercial driver license (CDL).
This flexibility speeds your passage back across the border. They verify your identity and citizenship-no other proof is required. EDL and EID cards are among the federally-approved border-crossing documents required under the Western Hemisphere Travel Initiative (WHTI).
Ice fishing is in full swing and the fish are biting. If your favorite resort is full the dates you have available, don’t fret, there are options.

Fresh Walleye Anyone?
A tradition up at Lake of the Woods are the fish frys. Come up and experience world class fishing “just like the good old days” and celebrate after with a great meal of fresh walleyes and sauger.
Some groups use the fish cleaning houses at the resort they are staying at to clean their catch. Others let the guides do the cleaning.
As far as the fish fry, cook your own in your cabin or have a resort cook them for you. Many resorts will cook up your fresh catch with all the sides we have come to love with a fish fry. Click Here for info on Resorts at Lake of the Woods.
