The Mercury Marine National Walleye Tournament got underway this morning at 6:30 Am fielding 302 boats, an overfull field. It’s been several years since the field was full. Weather this morning was warm and calm, a rarity on the first day of the event on Winnebago. The rest of today looks to be mild and sunny with light winds.
Reports early this morning indicate the mud trolling bite will be the key. Estimated weights to make the top ten today ranged from 16 to 19 pounds. Harnesses and crank baits seem to be about even in techniques to be applied today.
The Merc National is part of Walleye Weekend, and Fond du Lac festival drawing up the 35000 a day to Lakeside Park. Weigh in starts at approximately 2 PM on Oven Island.
