On August 23 and 24th the Boy Scouts of America held there annual father/son weekend at Bear Paw Scout Camp in Mountain, WI. In attendance were 350 fathers and sons to take part in various outdoor activities including archery, hiking, canoeing, camping and of course fishing to name a few. On Saturday a Fishing Basics Seminar was presented by Captain Tom Nelson #567 at two different times to reach the most fathers and sons possible. Each seminar was followed by a fishing contest where prizes were awarded to the person who caught the biggest fish and also the most fish.
During the Seminar all attendees were instructed on fishing safety, fish identification, basic knots, live and artificial bait, AIS, and they learned to cast with both a closed and open face spinning rod. Everyone in attendance went home with a fishing activity book that reinforced the topics that were covered in the seminar, fish ID cards, and a future angler t-shirt. During the fishing contest many fish were caught and nine kids caught there first fish ever. Through the course of the day 95 kids and 55 fathers attended the seminar.
I need to thank the following People and sponsors for making this event possible: NPAA Future Angler Foundation, Pure Fishing, Shakespeare Tackle, WI DNR, Yamaha Outboards, Greg Karch, Craig Huss, Dennis Nelson, and the Boy Scouts and there volunteers who assisted with the event.
