The weather has been tough all week during the AIM International Championship pre-fishing period, featuring huge winds and a cold front that went through today flattening out the winds and waves to near nothing. Predictions that the fishing would be both better AND worse than the pre-front period both turned out to be correct as several Pros put CRR totals in the upper 20 to mid 30 pound range while others lost their pre-fish bite and struggled to catch a 7 fish limit.

Gofron Leads AIM Championship

Mike Gofron ended the day leading by just under 3 pounds over Texas Pro Kevin Audrain. Mike is no stranger to the top spot and is well known as one of the leading Pro Walleye Anglers in the country. Kevin, a Pro from Texas, drove over 20 hours to get here, practiced in the big winds, and found his fish despite the big winds and tough weather, and talked onstage of his excitement in fishing against the Pros he has read about for years.Joe Okada is in third just 5 pounds back, continuing his 2010 AIM CRR hot streak. Joe, a ‘young gun’ in the AIM Circuit, is in 7th place for the JJ Keller Fishing Team Angler of the year standings coming into the Championship.Brett King, last year’s Bay of Green Bay AIM winner, is in fourth. Robert Blosser, leading the Angler of the Year standings coming into this event, held his standing against second place AOY place holder Jarrad Fuekiger. Blosser is in fifth, perennial top ten SD Pro Chad Schilling is in sixth, Jarrad Fluekiger seventh, Scott Glorvigen eighth, Scott Duncan is in ninth, and Rick Olson rounds out the top ten.The AIM Sanctioned Series tournament, held within the AIM International Walleye Championship, features teams qualifying to fish through one of the AIM Sanctioned Series events from six states and three Provinces in Canada. Sanches and Roehl lead the Sanctioned Series event with 26.90 and a commanding 8 pound plus advantage, Ustishen and Ustishen are in second, Lacoe and Dagel are in third, Fothergill and Rassmussen are in fourth, and Brown and Brown hold down fifth.Another reinforcing cold front is in the process of moving in now, bringing rain and cooler temps, and the promise of high winds to the area again tomorrow late. Precipitation is promised tomorrow and Friday, with the big breezes forecast to hit late tomorrow and sustaining through Friday. Temps are to fall into the high 50’s to low 60’s for Friday, offering the coolest temps seen in the area for quite some time. The field will hit the water tomorrow at 8 AM, and will be off the water at 4 PM and ready for the Virtual Weigh at the Gosh Dam Place in Deer River. After tomorrow’s weigh in is complete, the top 25 will qualify to compete Friday.
