NPAA member John Van Norman #802 took part in a kids fishing contest on 7/23/11 in Tomahawk, WI. The event is put on every year by Tomahawk Fishing Unlimited which John is a member. The organization also holds a kids Ice Fishing contest. The contest ran from 9:00 – 2:00. Each kid received a grab bag with a fishermans starter kit, granola bars, stickers and a box of worms. Each participant also received a hot dog, chips and pop. Things planned were teaching kids to cast with open and closed face reels, tying knots and talking about invasive species, unfortunately, a storm blew in about half way through the event, canceling most of that, but I was able to talk about fish species that we were after for the contest and handed out fish ID cards. We had 2 age groups and 6 fish species (bluegill, crappie, walleye, bass, northern, perch) First place in each category won a trophy, rod and received a NPAA t-shirt, second place received a rod, third place received a minnow bucket with some goodies.
We also gave away a rod from one of my sponsors Elk River Custom Rods from Phillips, WI
Tomahawk Fishing Unlimited and I would like to thank NPAA for the rods, t-shirts and the kids books and most of all the support to help organizations like ours to help keep the sport growing by working with and teaching our youth.
