The bite is heating up just in time for the AIM Weekend Walleye Series (AWWS) “Alumacraft Open” at Mille Lacs Lake on June 8th.
With water temperatures warming into the upper 50’s, the bite on the lake is improving every day. “You are going to see a mix of everything from rigging, to bobbers, to cranks,” stated Steve Kulifaj, new owner of the Red Door Resort.
“Most of the fish being caught right now are pretty deep and we are seeing lots of fish in the 20-26 inch range,” he added. “As of a week ago, there were reports of fish that were still spawning.”
Yamaha Pro Ross Grothe and his seven-year-old son Reid are hoping to take advantage of fishing Mille Lacs to its’ fullest potential since the lake’s 18-20 inch state imposed slot limit won’t be in play. “I love the AIM format of Catch-Record-Release (CRR). We don’t have to worry about which size fish we can and can’t keep.”
Grothe laughed recalling the first AWWS tournament of the season. “Reid couldn’t understand why we were throwing the fish back. It took him awhile to get the concept. I also made the mistake of bringing my Lake Erie net along, which was a little big for him to handle!”
He continued, “He also had to learn to multi-task. He sat down to have a sandwich, and a couple bites in he hooked a fish. He wasn’t sure if he should finish his sandwich or reel in the fish! Overall it was very rewarding and I felt like I had already won before I got on the water. I’m so grateful that Yamaha is backing the Weekend Walleye Series, giving me the opportunity to fish with my son. AIM and Yamaha are investing in the future!”
Boats will take off from the Red Door Resort in Aitkin, MN, at 7:30am and return at 3:30pm. The awards ceremony will take place at 5:30pm.
Entries will be accepted until 11:59pm on Wed. June, 4, 2014
