On Saturday June 20th with sunny skies overhead, five NPAA members converged on Montevideo, MN and hosted a Kids Fishing Clinic in conjunction with the Montevideo Fiesta Days Celebration. Members Kyle Agre #664, Darrell Peters # 263, Chris Lewis #753, Dan Pfeifer #916, and Nate Gilkey #956 were all in attendance.
There were six different stations set up for the kids to rotate through. Station 1 was a Casting station where the kids were able to learn how to cast or if they already knew how, they could hone their skills some more. Station 2 was the AIS Invasive Species Identification station where the kids learned what invasive species are, what they do to the lakes/rivers, and how to properly prevent the spread of them. CLEAN, DRAIN, DRY was the motto! Station 3 was a Live Bait Identification station where the kids learned about minnows, leeches, and night crawlers and when to use each for bait. Station 4 was the Fish Identification station where kids were quizzed on each type of species of fish and how to ID what they are catching. Station 5 was What’s in your Tackle Box where they learned about lures, hooks, bobbers, pliers, line clippers, sunscreen, and much more! Station 6 was the PFD/boat/water safety station where each child had to properly secure a lifejacket on themselves and learned the importance of wearing PFDs while on or near lakes and rivers.
Each participant was provided a scorecard and once they completed each station, they were able to redeem their scorecard for a giveaway prize. Rods and Reels, NPAA shirts, tackle boxes, books, and water bottles, were all given away. The clinic ran from 12pm to 2:30pm with 115 kids participating.
