Production and Stocking
Week of October 1
|
Wisconsin Walleye Initiative The two-year Wisconsin Walleye Initiative allows DNR to expand stocking of the larger walleye, known as “large fingerlings,” which are more expensive to produce but survive better. Through the initiative there will be $8.2 million for infrastructure improvements and $1.3 million each year for annual operating costs to expand production at DNR state fish hatcheries.
Increased funding gives us the opportunity to boost walleye populations through: 1) Increasing our operating budget so we can stock 5 times as many larger walleye that survive better, 2) Investing in hatchery upgrades that allow us to raise more of these larger fish and 3) Partnering with tribal, municipal and private fish hatcheries so they can supply more larger walleye

Three public meetings will be held in mid-October to discuss Wisconsin’s walleye fisheries and to get the public’s opinion on what considerations the state should use in coming years to decide how to allocate the increased number of large walleye for stocking made possible under the Wisconsin Walleye Initiative.
