MTT Anglers Find Big Fish and Success

by Joe Henry

The MN Tournament Trail finished up their two, one day tournaments this past Friday and Saturday on Lake of the Woods and the fishery did not disappoint.  Anglers were allowed to bring a total of 4 fish to the scales per two person teams.  Most teams spoke of catching 30 – 50 fish per day during the two tournament days despite dead calm water for much of the tournament.

There were basically walleyes caught across the lake using a variety of methods.  Jigging, pulling crawler harnesses and trolling crankbaits using leadcore line all proved successful.

Following the slot limit for Lake of the Woods, anglers had to return to the water walleyes 19.5 inches up to 28 inches.  If a walleye touched 28 inches or over, it was good.  Teams could bring in up to one trophy walleye per day.  On the first tournament day, 3 fish over 28 inches were brought in.  On the second tournament day, 5 trophy walleyes were caught.  Considering a field of about 43 boats, this is about a 10% average.

With calm conditions most of the tournament, anglers had to navigate carefully heading back to weigh in at Border View Lodge as a strong isolated thunderstorm popped up and skirted the south shore of Lake of the Woods.  Some would say this add to the adventure, while others were a bit nervous.  All in all, everyone made it back to port safely.

The MTT will return to Lake of the Woods on September 17 and 18 for the championship.
