NPAA member, Lynn Jurrens #982, Brian Blackwell and ten parents hosted the kindergarten class of Watertown Christian School at the 3rd Ave Trout Pond in Watertown, SD on Tuesday, May 22.
We started the day with hot dogs, worms and fish (gummy worms and fish in a bowl of blue jello). The kids enjoyed learning about ‘Fishers of Men’, safety, casting open and closed face reels, and the different types of bait.
The kids caught twelve rainbow trout, two bullheads and one bluegill. Lynn Jurrens commented, “It was the best pre-fishing day you could have. We had 19 different presentations going at one time. Worms and a plain hook clearly dominated and the kids made it an awesome day.”
Brian Blackwell, Fisheries Biologist with South Dakota Game, Fish and Parks was on hand for his expert fish identification skills. He also played a quick game depicting the negative effects of overharvesting.
Today was Ms. Carol Stein-Holien’s final day of her teaching career. We would like to say thanks to her for sharing an incredible talent with so many kids.
Thanks to NPAA, Running’s Farm Fleet, Al Patterson #188 of Reel Bait Tackle Company and Little River City for donating rods, tackle, bait and the educational materials.
