NPAA member Greg Karch #138 hosted a Family Fishing Day at Doty Park in Neenah, Wisconsin on June 25th. During the forty-five minute seminar on ‘Fishing Basics’ the following topics were covered; safety, details on open and closed face fishing combo’s, casting, fishing identification, knots, bait, part’s of a fish, what was in Greg’s tackle box when he was a youth and finally a AIS message on invasive species and remember to “inspect, drain, clean, dry”. After the clinic a family fishing tournament was held for the biggest and smallest fish and most fish caught in two age categories. These youths caught and released 162 fish. You should have seen all the smiles.
A story that came from this event is Caiden. Caiden is five years old and never fished prior to this year. Caiden has attended four of my fishing clinics this past year. During this weekends youth fishing tournament Caiden caught 35 fish in an hour and half . Caiden can identify 20 fish, he’s great at casting and boy can he set the hook. Caiden’s dad Jim, said it was the seminars and teaching aids that has allowed him to rapidly build his fishing skills. Caiden constantly reviews his fish identifications cards that I gave him along with the ‘Go Fishing’ book and is always in the backyard practicing his casting. This shows that we are making a difference!!!
A BIG thanks goes to Dave’s Musky Club of Kaukauna, Thrivent Financial for supplying food and shelter for the event, Northland Tackle Company, NPAA, Plano, Mercury, Maui Jim, Off Shore Tackle Company, The Reel Shot, TTI Blakemore Group for donating fishing rods, tackle boxes, tackle, shirts, hats and more. Together we are growing our great sport of fishing!!!!!
