NPAA member Michael R. Brand #876, hosted a Boy Scouts of America – Certified Angler Instructor Training at S-F Scout Ranch, Saint Louis Missouri. At this event, under the Direction Michael Brand and 15 additional BSA Certified Angler Instructors from across the Central Region; 20 BSA Adult Leaders were trained on both Fishing and Fly Fishing Instructional efforts.
After successfully completing the 2 day event, the entire team hosted a Fishing and Fly Fishing Merit Badge Skill Center where 100 Scouts ages 11-18, were provided an opportunity to earn the Fishing and Fly Fishing Merit Badge.
Fishing educational stations were setup where Scouters worked with the Boy Scouts and reviewed the following: safety, fishing combos and how to cast each of them, fishing identification, knots, bait, parts of a fish and fishing techniques, fly casting, fly tying, and had each Scout clean and cook a Trout. Near the end of the event the Missouri Department of Conservation message was reviewed.
Michael Brand said ‘What will be so gratifying will be teaching the Boy Scouts everything they need to earn the Fishing and Fly Fishing Merit badge but more importantly we provided them introduction to a lifetime hobby and appreciation of the outdoors.
Michael further discussed that the results of this Fall Course coupled with the results of the Spring Course resulted in nearly 200 Scouts being provided a quality Fly Fishing Experience, and resulted in nearly 45 trained BSA Certified Angler Instructors. The future of the sport is brighter due to the efforts of the Certified Angler Instructors at this event and across the country!
