Darrel Wood #882 and Kurt Dollar #897 took time out of their busy schedules to help out at the annual “Walleye Weekend” Kid’s Fishing Derby in Port Clinton, OH on May 25, 2014. They were given the responsibilities of Master of Ceremonies. Representing the NPAA, who with the help of NPAA sponsors, generously donated 50 Shakespeare rod and reel combos to give away to the first 50 children to enter.
It was a successful event, with between 150-200 children attending, along with one or both parents tagging along.
Darrell and Kurt shared the NPAA’s mission of educating the youngsters about AIS (Aquatic Invasive Species) and how to help prevent the spread of this nuisance with CDD “Clean, Dry, and Drain”.
After handing out the rods and reels they showed the kids, with the help of their parents, how to tie on a casting plug that they could practice with before their fishing derby. Then, the kids practiced until it was time to tie on a real hook and bobber, so they could fish in the local pond at Water Works Park in downtown Port Clinton. The pond had been stocked the week before with a mixture of 500 bass, bluegill, and catfish for this event.
It was a successful event that had a lot of happy little people smiling all day long! The folks at “Main Street Port Clinton” would like to thank the NPAA for all their support and hope they can be a part of next year’s event too.
