Saturday, July 24, the 10th annual “Take an Adult Fishing Tournament” was held at the Wilderness Fish and Game store in Sauk City, Wisconsin. This event is the highlight of the summer for many children and adults in the small communities of Columbia, Dane, Iowa, and Sauk Counties. Every summer, the “fish any waters you want” event draws over 75 teams and over 200 participants.
As most of you know, running a tournament like this requires considerable year-round work and then you have the one intangible that you have no control over, the weather. Despite a week of heavy precipitation, high winds, strong currents on the Wisconsin River, and dirty water the tournament started at 6:00 am with a rules meeting and prayer. The teams fished Devils Lake, Lake Wisconsin, White Mound Lake, Lake Mendota, the Black Earth Creek, and even the rushing Wisconsin River. A majority of the teams managed to find fish and there were some nice catches in the six fish categories; bass (both kinds), walleye and sauger, panfish, roughfish, catfish, and trout. The top two heaviest weights in each category received a trophy and rod and reel combo. All teams and participants received a cap, “goodie” bag, and a chance for many other donated prizes from the great sponsors like Pure Fishing.
The teams were required to be in for the official weigh-in at 2:00 pm. Wisconsin DNR Secretary Matt Frank was there to help hand out trophies and talk to the big crowd. Warden Greg Stacey was there with an invasive species exhibit and explained the importance of cleaning your boat and not spreading any invasive weeds to other waters.
The rain stopped by the morning take-off and the weather continued to improve throughout the day. NPAA members played an important part in making this tournament such a success! NPAA members who helped included; Robert Blosser # 255, Jim Kloth # 633, Wally Banfi # 815, Terry Frey # 132, Joe Okada # 660, and MC Gary Engberg # 184. The event wouldn’t have been such a success without the help from all these members.
The main purpose of the event was to get more and more children out on the water in a healthy drug-free environment with loved ones. If children are not taught and taken fishing at an early age, then their chances of participating in this life-long activity are minimal. The NPAA continues to work at getting more and more children involved in fishing and the outdoors.
