On Sat. July 5th NPAA member Brent Long with his daughters Christena and Brittany held a Youth Fishing Clinic at The Great Blue Heron music festival in Sherman, NY for 17 kids.

The students learned about safety on and around the water, then were taught the basics of open and closed faced fishing reels.  The students learned to tie both the clinch knot and Palomar knot, and learned to identify different species of fish. The students were shown different types of rod set ups and their specific uses.

After learning the basics of casting the students were able to practice their new skills fishing for pan fish. Future Angler member Drake Long was helping the kids refine their casting technics and hook setting skills. The kids looked at different types of live bait as they learned what fish eat and also looked at the use of products like gulp leading into a discussion of invasive species and how bait, aquatic plants, organisms, fish and transferring water in bait buckets can spread AIS.

Thanks to the NPAA and The Future Anglers Foundation for supplying the Fishing Basics books and the AIS information that each child received.
