The fishing is excellent all over the lake. Key spots this past week are both gaps, Pine Island, Knight and Bridges, Archies Reef, Arnesens Reef and Garden Island. Walleyes are being caught from 5 ft of water with a wind swept shoreline to 30 feet on main lake basin. Good numbers and big fish are the norm. Jigging, spinners and pulling cranks effective. Colors, gold, glow and orange. Fishing is on fire right now.
Smallmouth bass are in the shallows. Good numbers coming form the Rainy River. Tapering shorelines with bolders or incoming rivers have been key.
Up at the NW Angle. Excellent fishing continues. As on south shore, limits of walleyes the norm. 15 – 25 feet of water, jigging, spinners and cranks. Walleyes starting to move to reefs. Smallmouth bass in shallows. Target by casting shallow diving cranks. Big pike being caught by walleye and bass anglers. Muskie season is open in Ontario waters. 50+ inch fish were caught this weekend. More info at www.lakeofthewoodsMN.com or on Facebook. The Rapala Scatter Rap Challenge is here on The Walleye Capital of the World. Six anglers are fishing from Kenora in the northern part of the lake all the way down the lake, into the Rainy River and finishing up at Willie Walleye in Baudette.
6 guys, 5 days, 100 miles is the tagline. The partners are Rapala, Cabelas, Lake of the Woods Tourism, In Depth Outdoors and Ranger boats.
Executive Director of Tourism and licensed charter captain Joe Henry is one of the anglers. “The event is going incredibly. Big fish and a lot of fish are being caught. The only lure we can use is the new Rapala Scatter Rap, in conjunction with equipment from Cabelas and fishing out of Ranger Boats. It is exciting for the world to see how special Lake of the Woods really is!”
Watch daily as the 5 day fishing event unfolds on social media, on a website and through two fishing shows that will air after MN Twins games on Fox Sports North on June 23rd and June 30th.
The event began Monday, June 17th and runs through Friday. Video updates are being posted throughout the day on how fishing is going, where the fish were caught, etc. GPS coordinates are being given out. Blogs with big fish pics will be sent out daily. Click Here to check out the action!
Smallmouth Bass Fishing is on Fire!
Bass fishing is on Fire.
Great numbers of fish are being caught in the NW Angle and also on the Rainy River.
In the Angle, focus on bays with scattered boulders and tapering points and shorelines with scattered rock.
On the Rainy River, focus on slowly tapering shorelines with scattered boulders and a bit of current. Also river mouths have been hot.
During the Scatter Rap Challenge, shallow diving Rapala Scatter Raps were casted to shorelines and were on fire.
This week 40+ fish days have been common. While fishing bass, don’t be surprised to boat some nice walleyes and pike as well.
