Fish shallow waters for fun, bigger walleyes
There are times and conditions when targeting the shallows produce bigger walleyes than rigging or trolling deep water. One such instance is in weedy lakes. Vegetation provides cover, which attracts minnows, which bring in predator fish like walleyes.
Weeds act like a natural wall where walleyes will often patrol the edges. When they find minnows, they’ll herd them to shallow water closer to the weeds and cane to attack. The result is that whenever walleyes inhabit the greenery, they’re there for just one reason – to feed. The action can be fantastic.
Use spinning gear. A 6-foot, 8-inch St. Croix ES68MXF rod with 10-pound braided line will do. Stick with a 1/16th or 1/8th-ounce jig tipped with a plastic shad body, or a leech, or half of a night crawler. Use a heavier jig when the wind is blowing.
