Team last to weigh walleyes wins tournament
The father-in-law and son-in-law team, who were in sixth place Saturday, struggled Sunday morning. “We didn’t pick up a lot of fish early today,” Schneider said. “All of our fish pretty much came within an hour today. So we just had to keep grinding it out until they bit.”
Once they had caught four fish, they thought they had a good chance of winning the tournament. “The fish were there,” Schneider said. “We just had to get them to bite.”
Saturday’s leaders, Jim Vogds and Gary Sabel of Fond du Lac, dropped to 16th place with 22.88 pounds of walleye, their total on Saturday.
Anglers caught 478 fish Saturday and 436 on Sunday. Fifteen of the top 25 teams reached the five-fish limit Saturday, while only 10 of the top 25 teams reached the limit Sunday. Because there was a slight east wind Sunday, many fishers came back with a limited amount catch or several small fish.
“We had a lot of teams who had decent weights yesterday (Saturday) and couldn’t put a bag together today (Sunday),” Keith Kavajecz, the master of ceremonies, said.
Six of the top 10 teams had at least one member from Fond du Lac.
The biggest fish caught Sunday was 6.9 pounds by Kyle and Mark Petrie of Fond du Lac. Saturday’s biggest fish was caught by Carig Bohn, of Rosendale, and Casey Bohn, of Fond du Lac, weighing 7.4 pounds. Each team will take home a 9.9 horesepower Mercury motor for their boats.
Cash prizes were awarded to the top 65 teams. The top 20 teams won $1,000 or more.
Part of the proceeds made from the entry fee of the tournament go to benefit conservation practices of the FishAmerica Foundation and Walleyes for Tomorrow.
