Warm weather heats up walleye bite
As of Sunday there was excellent catching going on in the area north and NE of Port Clinton all along the west side of Catawba Island in 15-18’ of water. This area has been loaded with undersized walleye just short of the 15” size limit. Most charter boats reported catching in excess of 200 walleye as they sorted through to get enough keepers to fill out a limit catch. This is awesome action and great fun, but it does put some stress on the smaller fish that are dominating the area at the moment. Try to take care when releasing these small fish by handling them as little as possible when releasing them. A small wire hook remover can be used and helps remove the hook and release the fish without human hands touching the fish. Handling them excessively can wipe off the protective coating that covers the skin and scales of the fish, allowing fungus to attack the skin of the fish eventually killing them. A little care will help insure that these fish will be here for us next year and beyond when they will reach keeper size.
