In a move that I have been anticipating and dreading for a while now, the Pennsylvania Game Commission has given preliminary approval to move the opening day of firearms deer season to the Saturday following Thanksgiving rather than the traditional Monday.
This will allow for three Saturdays of firearms deer season and adjusting other hunting seasons to accommodate this change.
I am the standard opponent to this change. I’m a senior hunter (you know, set in my ways and ornery if you take something away.) I am also the owner of a hunting camp, which means I travel “up to the mountains” three days before the buck season opener to shoot in guns, hike the woods, go over lists of hunting gear several times before the hunt, experience camaraderie with my campmates and relax the Sunday before the hunt to anticipate the big day.
